Measure Describer

Copilot writes plain-English descriptions for your measures; you review and edit them here, then save them to the model from DAX query view.

Step1

Export your model from Power BI Desktop

This is the same query the KPI Measure Builder uses. If you already ran it, paste those results in Step 2.

  1. Open your report in Power BI Desktop and select DAX query view on the left rail.
  2. Paste the query below into a new query tab and select Run.
  3. Above the results grid, select Copy. It copies every row with the column headers.

Step2

Paste the query results

Paste straight from the Copy button. The summary shows how much of the model is already described.

Step3

Choose measures and copy the prompt

Pick the measures to describe. Each prompt covers the next few that don't have a description yet, so long lists are worked through a prompt at a time.

Measures that build HTML or SVG (by name, or by markup in their DAX) are left unticked and tagged HTML/SVG. Select all shown leaves them out too; tick one yourself to include it.

Descriptions show as tooltips in the Data pane, so shorter reads better.
Measures per prompt One prompt suits a file sent to Copilot. Choose a number if Copilot’s reply stops partway.
Prompt for Copilot

Paste the prompt into Copilot, then paste its reply in Step 4. This prompt then moves on to the next measures by itself, so repeat until the progress bar is full. The last line is === END OF PROMPT ===; if Copilot's input box doesn't show it, choose fewer measures per prompt.

Step4

Paste Copilot's reply, review, and apply

Use the Copy button on Copilot's code block and paste it here. Each reply is added to the review below and the box clears for the next one, so nothing you paste earlier is lost.

Pasting adds it automatically; use the button if you typed or edited the text.
